Daughter of Smoke and Bone | Book Review

This book had a lot of hype surrounding it on Youtube (or more accurately, BookTube), and I’d only been hearing good things about it so decided to read it for myself. And I have to say, I was not disappointed. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is such a great book, with strong characters and a fantastical world created by Laini Taylor. It’s quite a hard book to describe though without giving away too much, but I definitely recommend everyone take the time to read this because you won’t be sorry.

Karou runs errands for a mysterious creature called Brimstone, which involves her collecting teeth. Karou herself doesn’t know what the teeth are for, and there is a mystery surrounding who, or even what she really is. There is a lot of mystery going on in this book that you unravel the further along you read. It goes at a good pace though, not giving away everything upfront and still holding back a few secrets until just the right time. It’s written from different perspectives, Karou and Akiva, and sometimes fragments from different times, which helps to piece together the story.

Karou is such an interesting character, she’s been brought up accepting that monsters are real and they’re the only family she’s ever know. She’s doesn’t know anything about who she really is, and Brimstone isn’t inclined to give her answers. I really liked Karou, she was at times so uncertain about her place in the world, having been raised both in the real world and Elsewhere, but was still such a strong character.

I really liked Akiva as a character as well, I enjoyed learning his story and seeing how it intertwined with Karou’s. It’s hard to say much about it without giving things away but I thought that he and Karou were really well matched and it’ll be interesting to see how things go for each of them through the next books.

I love how everything unfolds in this story, the details all start clicking into place as you near the end and you realise how cleverly the story was written, how much more there is to each character than you originally thought. The world that Taylor has created is a mix of real world and a world of fantasy, a world filled with monsters, where different myths are brought together to create a new legend. It’s a really well developed world with so many connecting parts.

This is such a good book, and as part of a trilogy I’m looking forward to getting into the next book and delving further into this world. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a must read for all fantasy lovers.
